Estonia has sent an ESTPOL9 border guard team to assist Latvia in preventing illegal migrants from entering the European Union. The team was deployed on Monday, July 29. This move was reported by ERR.

Recent attempts to cross the Latvian-Belarusian border illegally have been on the rise. In the first three weeks of July alone, Latvian border guards stopped 730 such attempts. As a result, Latvian authorities sought assistance from their Estonian counterparts to deal with the mounting pressure.

The Estonian Police and Border Guard Board sent a team of 11 members, including a dog handler with a dog and drone operators, to patrol the border area. They will be working in Latvia for two weeks, after which they will be replaced by another group. The team will be stationed around Kaplava and Robežniek, where there has been a recent increase in crossing attempts.

The Estonian Police and Border Guard Board expressed their readiness to provide assistance for a longer period if needed, but any decision will be made jointly with the Latvian Border Guard. Previously, Estonia had sent its military and drones to the Polish-Belarusian border and also provided assistance to Slovenia in addressing the migration crisis.
