Lithuanian Defense Minister Laurynas Kasčiūnas has announced the opening of the first section of the fence in the border area with Belarus. The site is expected to be operational by the end of August, with permanent fortifications to be built in two other locations in September. The minister stated that there will be a total of 27 such sites, and they will be created almost every week. The barriers will include dragon’s teeth, anti-tank hedgehogs, and other concrete barriers, making it difficult for vehicles to move if necessary. Similar barriers are planned for the border with Russia, including near the Kaliningrad region.

The announcement was reported by Delfi. Additionally, Deputy Minister of Communications and Transport, Agnė Vaiciukevičiūtė, stated that backup barriers will be installed on Lithuanian national roads and approaches to bridges. Special engineering structures will be equipped on 9 bridges to attach explosive devices to destroy them in case of an enemy advance. The ministry aims to complete this by December 31, 2025. The Ministry of Defense plans to allocate up to €3 million from its budget this year for the implementation of these measures, while starting in 2025, the Lithuanian Defense Fund will cover the expenses.
