In December 2023, the pilot of an aircraft shot down over the Kherson region released video footage of the moments after the Patriot missile hit the jet. The video, which was archived, was published by Russian telegram channels. The pilot, a Russian, recorded the crash on his cell phone while in the ejection seat. Ukrainian Air Force command reported hitting Russian targets with anti-aircraft weapons at the location where the Russian pilot was shot down. The crash site was more than 70 kilometers from the Ukrainian-controlled Dnipro River coast, indicating the use of a long-range Patriot air defense system. During the time of the incident, the intercepted Russian Su-34 bombers were being used to launch modified bombs at Ukrainian positions on the occupied left bank of the Dnipro River. Previously, the Defense Forces of Ukraine had destroyed one Su-34 and damaged two more in a long-range drone strike on the Russian military airfield in Morozovsk.
