وزير الدفاع اللاتفي يعبر عن دعمه لفرض الخدمة العسكرية الإلزامية على النساء
Latvian Defense Minister Andris Sprūds has expressed his support for introducing compulsory military service for women. The issue, however, needs to be discussed in parliament and society to find acceptable solutions, according to the Delfi portal. There is currently no consensus among politicians in the ruling parties of the Latvian parliament on this matter.
Last week, Leonīds Kalniņš, the commander of the Latvian National Armed Forces, suggested considering the possibility of mandatory drafting for women. When asked about the potential for drafting all young people over 18, regardless of gender, Kalniņš said he supports mandatory drafting for both sexes. He believes this would motivate men to be more active in service, rather than avoiding it.
Latvia reinstated compulsory military service last year, applying to men aged 18 to 27. The service lasts for 11 months, with a month of leave. From January 1, 2024, it will be mandatory. Women of the same age can also join voluntarily. The introduction of conscription and increased defense spending have been proposed by Latvia and Estonia’s presidents to enhance NATO member states’ defense capabilities in preparation for a potential war with Russia.
