Russia has sent a warship, the corvette Mercury, into the Kattegat Strait between Denmark and Sweden. This move aims to monitor a Chinese cargo ship, the Yi Peng 3, which is suspected of damaging telecommunications cables in the Baltic Sea. The Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat reported this development, citing experts who confirmed the warship’s presence through radio intelligence. The Russian vessel’s deployment follows an incident on November 19 when the Danish Navy detained the Yi Peng 3 for allegedly damaging two telecommunications cables. Sweden is also conducting an investigation into the ship’s involvement in the incident.
Helsingin Sanomat further clarified that Mercury’s objective could be to observe the situation involving the Chinese vessel or to display Russian military presence. The Yi Peng 3 had departed from the Russian port of Ust-Luga on November 11, with Russian Alexander Stechentsev reportedly piloting the ship out of the port on November 15.
