German Officer Admits Passing Military Information to Russians out of Fear of Nuclear War

A German officer, who was accused of spying for Russia, has admitted to passing military information to the Russians. The 54-year-old Bundeswehr captain, whose name has not been disclosed by German media, revealed during his trial in Düsseldorf that he took this action out of fear of a nuclear war. According to Spiegel, the captain was responsible for electronic warfare systems. The officer’s goal, according to the federal prosecutor’s office, was to give the Russian armed forces an advantage amid the current political situation. He claimed that he had hoped to find out in advance when a nuclear attack would occur, in order to protect his family by contacting the Russian consulate. The officer expressed regret for his actions and attributed them to his poor psychological state at the time.

Previously, Germany had detained alleged Russian agents who were planning sabotage at military facilities in support of Russian special services. These agents targeted transportation routes used for military cargo, with the aim of undermining German support for Ukraine. The German officer’s espionage case is separate from these previous arrests.
